Two of the Best Beaches in Greece
Late last September, we flew from Lake Como, Italy (see here, here, and here) to a small Greek island that our friends told us about just one month earlier. It was not the most optimized trip I've ever planned, but I'm really happy with the way it turned out!
Milos was like a breath of fresh open air, with plenty of space to explore, take creative risks, and also sleep off the bad cold I picked up on this trip. That’s why you’ll see more photos of Dan than me. For once, he was willing to fill in as model!
Sarakiniko Beach
With over 70 beautiful beaches around the island, Sarakiniko Beach is by far the most popular. Unlike some of the beaches, it is also really simple to get to via an easy turn off the main road from Mandrakia where we stayed in an Airbnb. It is often called Lunar Beach for its white volcanic rock formations that resemble a moonscape.
The water is so clear and refreshing, and if the water is calm there are some great cliffs to jump off. While it never got too crowded, I definitely recommend getting there early to have it to yourself or for better photos.

Plathiena Beach
Our Airbnb host was so sweet to map out the best beaches for us, and Plathiena Beach was starred as one of her favorites. In fact we passed her driving to the beach as we were leaving it, so you know it’s locals approved!
While the drive down the winding cliff to get there is a little intimidating, we were rewarded with the most stunning white sand beach with clear, shallow water for several meters. It was amazing to be able to swim out so far and still be able to touch the bottom.
This beach had very few people there even at midday, and there is a convenient little beach bar serving classic Greek snacks and drinks. Afterwards we drove straight to Pollonia to enjoy an amazing waterfront meal while watching the sunset (see here).
